Teacher's Friend Easy Marker and Grader
Breaking News EMG has arrived!
18/07/06:
MAJOR OVERHAUL - Present Version
I am very
pleased to announce that EM and EG have now finally been combined into a single
Excel file: EMG.
I have been Beta-Testing EMG for the last year at my school and it is now ready
for release.
A Demo Version is available with a comprehensive Web Help Manual or a downloadable
*.chm Help Manual are available from this link.
Teacher's Friend Easy Marker © is an Excel 2000 file that is predominantly a Button/Menu driven Markbook designed to assist teachers with little or no Excel experience to store and manipulate their classes' yearly marks or grades. Easy Marker has the feel and usability of a 'stand-alone' piece of software rather than that of a Spreadsheet.
At the time of Easy Marker’s development all too many Markbook programs seemed to be unnecessarily complicated to use and had an overabundance of ways of managing and presenting pupil marks. This seemed to miss the point which, at least for me, was to present a clear and meaningful representation of how a pupil was progressing on a variety of assessments throughout their school year with the least amount of fuss for the teacher inputting the marks!
A variety of automated statistical calculations and graphs can be accessed by the user. The user can also automatically import the class list from a formatted text file (Download an example Pupil Name Text File)
Some important considerations for me whilst designing Easy Marker were:
…and perhaps most importantly

LATEST UPGRADE (18/07/06): EasyMarker and Grader EMG. Cost (£20 GBP)
Updates:
18/07/06: MAJOR OVERHAUL
- Present Version
A
Demo version together with a Web Help Manual or a downloadable *.chm Help Manual
are available from this link.
13/03/05 Version (2.0):
(1). Major Update: An extra Worksheet has been added. In it are contained
three Bar Charts, one for each of the Homework, Test and Exam mark sections
of the "All Data" Worksheet. Each mark column value is shown as a
Bar out of 100% regardless of its type: Numerical Mark, Grade or National Curriculum
Level. A dropdown Name list allows any pupil's details to be shown one at a
time. The class average is shown as a small dot superimposed on top of each
respective bar.
(2). Minor Update: Averages are now automatically calculated when importing
details from another (perhaps previous version) Markbook file.
25/09/04 Version (1.11.0):
(1). Major Update: You now have a system by which a column can have National
Curriculum Level descriptors entered into it. Namely: levels 8a, 8b, 8c, 7a,
7b, 7c,....,1a, 1b and 1c.
Such columns can coexist with other numerical and/or grade columns and still
yield an average. There are two methods of altering the associated numerical
values of the NC Levels and several routines to pick up errors along the way.
From the "CALCULATE..." Menu on the Toolbar click on Help and look under 'Column
"Out Of" Values', "Inputting Marks" and "National Curriculum Levels" or alternatively
let the mouse hover over the comment box to the right of any cell with the text
"Out of.." inside it and read the brief info in the comment.
(2). Minor Update: The "COMMENTS" text file is now automatically written
to the same folder from which Easy Marker is open. If any problems are encountered
an error routine gives the user the opportunity to write this file to the a:
drive if required.
10/02/04 Version (1.10.1):
Minor Update: Commendated numerical scores or letter grades are entered
by using either a“cd”, "Cd", "cD" or “CD”
prefix (without a gap between this prefix and score). They are identified on
Worksheet by a yellow background colour in the cell.
7/12/03 Version (1.10):
Minor Update: Zero scores are now highlighted in the colour of their section:
Red, Purple, Green or Blue. Late numerical scores or letter grades are entered
by using an “L” or “l” prefix (without a gap between
this prefix and score). They are identified on Worksheet by a light blue background
colour in the cell.
Only the Homework Pupil Names section can be used to add or delete pupils from
the whole “All Data” worksheet. This will prevent inexperienced
users from adding or deleting names incorrectly.
Other Minor bugs fixed.
09/10/02 Version (1.9):
All bugs running Easy Marker with Excel 2000 on Windows XP have now been
fixed.
01/07/02 Version (1.8):
Major Update: You can now SCALE any or all of the four Average Columns;
HW, TEST, EXAM or SUMMARY, by several methods. To do this click on any "Scale
Averages" Button (or select "Average Mark Scaler Box" from the CALCULATE...
Menu on the Toolbar) . You will then be taken to a new Worksheet in which the
Mean Value or the Standard Deviation of one of the Column Averages can be altered.
In addition, the Marks can also be biased towards their Maximum or Minimum Mark.
The Scaled Marks are shown alongside the Original Marks plotted on the same
Axes. The Original Marks may be returned to at any time. Notice that Calculating
an Average will reset its respective Scale Factors to Zero automatically. Printouts
will indicate if scaling has taken place.
10/06/02 Version (1.7):
(1). Major Update: You now have a system by which a column can have LETTER
GRADES entered into it. Such columns can coexist with other numerical columns
and still yield an average. There are two methods of altering the associated
numerical values of the letter grades and several routines to pick up errors
along the way. I am hoping to write a PDF Help File over the summer but before
then there should be enough information from the Help Topics Box (via the "CALCULATE..."
Menu on the Toolbar). Look under 'Column "Out Of" Values', "Inputting Marks"
and "Letter Grades" or alternatively let the mouse hover over the comment box
to the right of any cell with the text "Out of.." inside it and read the brief
info in the comment.
(2). Minor Update: The Teacher Information Dialogue Boxes on the "Teacher Info"
Worksheet have now been joined as one. You are also now able to write in a full
name for the Teacher and for their Group (rather than the previously suggested
initials) as the cells into which they go have been formatted to resize the
text input. However, if you are importing the Markbook into Easy Grader
then don't make these names too long or they will look messy once in Easy Grader
(Though I have increased the size of some of the cells in the latest version)
- though it will still work OK!
17/03/02 Version (1.6):
Some options have been included to improve the layout of the automatic
worksheet printing. For example: Scaling the size to fill the A4 sheet either
horizontally or vertically, adding gridlines or not and the print quality (though
at present this does not work on all printers). This modification should vastly
improve the reading of anything printed from the "All Data" Worksheet
which was a little on the 'reduced' size!
22/01/02 Version (1.5):
Some improvements made in automatic pupil sorting. (Behind the scenes stuff)
04/11/01 Version (1.4):
(1) Homework, Test or Exam Comments from above the respective Mark Columns
are now automatically copied from one Markbook to another (along with all other
information in the Markbook) on clicking the "Import Names & Data from other
similar Markbook" Button - This is VERY useful for updates. However, don't forget
to manually rename the active workbook as it does not automatically take the
name of the previous file for reasons of safety.
(2) When previously clicking on either of the "Clear Data" or "Clear All" Buttons
the Homework, Test or Exam Comments stayed as they were. Now all of the Comments
also clear out all of their information when either button is clicked.
(3) A new Button, "Save Comments to Text File", has been added. This writes
all of the information stored in the Homework, Test or Exam Comments, respectively,
to a Text File of your choice which is saved directly to the C: drive. This
is useful when considering printouts of the "All Data" sheets. The Comments
that contain any information you have added regarding the particular Homeworks,
etc, can then be compared to the marks on the printouts.
12/09/01 Version (1.3):
The Year Inputted now automatically increments for the Spring and Summer
Term options.
20/08/01 Version (1.2):
An error with the border around the pupil names and forms on the TEST marks
section has been cured.
18/07/01 Version (1.1):
A routine that displays an information box on opening has been added. The box
contains details of the last opening time/date of the file.
